Why Do We Gifts During Christmas?

11/7/2017

Picture
Christmas is the time of the year where people come together to share their time with one another. It is the time where people give gifts and wish everyone around them happiness and peace. Christmas most of all is the birthday of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Christmas has always been special to my family. Even through the hard times and good times, we always try to make Christmas meaningful. We would share gifts with one another and make a special Christmas Eve dinner. We’d open our presents on Christmas morning and eat the left overs from last night. On the times that we did not have money. My mom would just make spaghetti and we’d have bread with it, but it was still wonderful. And even if there we’re no gifts from Mum and Dad or even Santa at that time, we still knew that Christmas was truly merry.

Gift Giving on Christmas

Many people associate Christmas with gifts. We always think of Santa Claus carrying his big red sack of gifts down the chimney. We are excited to open the presents under the Christmas tree, but have you ever wondered why people started giving gifts on Christmas?

The Three Wise Men

Gift giving goes way back to the first ever Christmas two thousand years ago. Three wise men or Magi visited Jesus. They saw the signs in the sky and a huge glowing star that told them that the Messiah is to come. So they traveled from the East, guided by the Star of Bethlehem in search of Jesus.

The Three Wise Men also known as the Three Kings, carried with them gifts. They have gold from Melchor, frankincense from Gaspar and myrrh from Balthazar. These gifts had deeper meaning. Gold which means a gift for a king. Frankincense that symbolizes divinity and holiness. And finally myrrh, that symbolizes death.

These gifts to Jesus showed that even the Wise and Powerful Magi recognized that Jesus is the Son of God.

Santa Claus

Picture
Santa Claus whose real name is St. Nicholas was a saint who shared his riches with others. He is also known as Father Christmas. We know him today as a big and chubby man wearing a red jacket, red pants, red bonnet and a pair of shiny boots and belt. His has the iconic red sack filled with toys and gifts for children. He is often seen with his best buddy Rudolf, the Red Nosed Reindeer.

St. Nicholas was a wealthy bishop who was kind and helpful. He lived in Myra, in present day Turkey around the 4th century. He was known to be kind towards others. His story began when a poor man who had three girls wanted to get his daughters married. However, he did not have any money for the dowry and so he could not find grooms for his girls. And so it was said that for three consecutive nights, St. Nicholas would drop in a bag of gold coins that would fall into socks drying by the hearth. On the third night, the poor man hid beside the hearth and saw Nicholas dropping the coins.

Nicholas did not want the man to tell others of his generosity but the man did so and so the story of his kindness spread. In his later life, Nicholas was exiled but there has been no records of his death and how he died.

The stories of his kindness spread out to Europe. In the UK he was known as Father Christmas because of the plays and stories about a man giving gift on Christmas. Soon Europeans came to the US. With them, they brought the stories of Santa Nicholas or St. Nicholas. Later the Santa Nicholas became Santa Claus.

Up to this day the story of St. Nicholas’ kindness to children and his ability to share gifts has touched many. Although most may not know his true life story, Santa Claus has always been seen by many as a kind and jolly old man who wants to make all children happy.

Shopping for Gifts

Gift giving is a great way to share love and happiness. It is a wonderful way to share your love to others. When you buy a gift for someone, you not only gift that person a gift, you also gift him or her the time and effort to choose that perfect gift. You give a part of you to the person who receives the gift.

On the other hand this concept of generosity and kindness of gift giving on Christmas has been exploited by many capitalists and marketers nowadays. A lot see Christmas as an economic phenomenon to make money from others wanting to buy presents for their family and friends.

Giving gifts should never be about money or showing off. It should be about love and connection. Christmas would still be Christmas no matter what kind of present you give. It doesn’t matter if it’s expensive or not, all that matters is that you’ve remember the person you are giving a gift to.

When buying presents, remembering that you need to save rather than putting out too much money is helpful. Shopping from charity shops, used books stores and discount places is nothing to be ashamed of. You can also do shopping for discounts on days like Cyber Monday or Black Friday. I use this site to get the best sales and discounts in the UK.  Last year I got a really good deal on a new laptop for my son at Curry's PC World. Or you can even buy presents after Christmas when shops have really big savings as long as you are super organised!

Remember that Christmas is still about Jesus. The parties, the food and the presents make Christmas livelier but do not forget what it is all about.

Being a Psychic in Catholic Family

When I was young, we went to church a lot. Actually it was one of my most remembered memories. After church we would go out to eat in a restaurant. And it really made me happy. Though being in the church bored me a little bit, I still marveled at what really goes in the church. I mean I could sense a buzz hanging in the air; something like a static that only belonged in such places. I used to feel a sense of pull when I was in church, like someone was pulling me inward. I would also feel a sense of celestial-weird-disembodied-but wonderful feeling when I went to church before. But when I was a child, I kept a secret from my family and kept it from them a bit until now. I am a psychic.

Confession Time

If you've read my previous posts you will know that I do use psychics some times.  Whilst in the bible it says that we shouldn't it also says a lot of things that we should and shouldn't do that Christian people now do (Playing stringed instruments? Being homosexual.)  So if you like me use psychics don't feel ashamed, as long as you love God with all your heart you will be fine.  Of course not all psychics are real and so if you want a good one you should get a friend to recommend you if possible or if not check out some reviews such as this site which I like, it's by a christian lady called Iris and here you can find the best psychic reviews she has tried.  If you know a good psychic then you can comment and share it there too.

Growing Up Years

Growing up in a strict catholic family meant that I have to go to church a lot on weekends, attend bible studies, go to retreats and much, much more. I did like it a lot like when I was nine, I used to go to church every day, not because my told me so, but because I did really want to. I felt the joy and happiness at that time, no longer the detached-celestial-bored-scary-holy-weird feeling that I would get when I was much younger. I yearned for it. But deep down inside I also felt confused. As I was growing up I would always have de javu and weird dreams. I always thought I was different from other kids. But this I could not really explain. I never thought that I can be a psychic or anything like that, I just thought that I want to have better dreams.

As I grew up, I started loving things connected with the psyche and the arcane. I still was very much catholic but I cannot accept that God could be confined to what my church defines him to be and that other religions are wrong. So I learned about other schools of faith. I read about Buddhism, Wicca, Islam and so forth. This was me at 16, and at that time I felt that it might not yet be the time. I stayed with my faith. In my first year of college (I took up Psychology) I learned about St. Thomas and Summa Theologica and this made me trust that there is God. But I still longed for what was shunned by my faith: magick and spiritual insight to the future.

And so came my immense love for Wicca. I identified with it and felt that I am a Wiccan Witch. I knew I was still Catholic and I do not want to change religions, but I was also a Wiccan. And then I learned about reading the Tarot and doing candle magick. I thought that it was God who gave magick. I refuse to think that magick is evil. My family on the other hand found the way of me getting dressed in Edwardian style clothes or black felt weird, but since I still went to church a lot, they felt I’m just doing this for fashion.

Journey to Enlightenment

When I became an adult, I later on met my husband and he was a Chinese Buddhist but also a Catholic. They believed in Zen Buddhism and Catholicism both at the same time. He on the other hand, did not have much faith in being a Christian. And so I convinced him to become more faithful to God and Jesus. But he had his Buddhist traditions which I wanted to keep. So we went to temples and such. I went to church less, since I felt many people who go to church are fakes and that true Christianity lies in the heart.

My husband was very open minded in me practicing being a psychic. We bought several Tarot cards. I learned to hone my skills though I may not be as good as others because my visions come and go. They were very clear like watching TV, but it was difficult for me to make predictions for others at first. I felt that my life was going much better. I believed that faith is fluid and should not be confined but what others say. I know that true goodness is much more important.

As I became busy with life and at some point did not practice my psychic abilities, I felt stressed and tired. I yearned for the call of reading Tarot cards. I also fell into Yoga. Yoga literally saved me. I had been depressed and felt life was like running a hamster wheel but yoga allowed me clear my mind. This made me fall in love with the practical sense of traditional Buddhism, the one which is not Zen but real and pure. I learned about letting go of desire and allowing myself feel pain and then controlling myself to not embrace the pain.

What Is It Like and What to do?

Many people have talents and capabilities that they hide because they feel that it is a bad thing. But being a psychic is a gift. Even if you feel that you want to hide from it, it will surely find you. Your Third Eye Chakra is full of energy so you have to release it. Being a psychic is not evil. Even in the Bible, many people were blessed by God with this gift. Daniel, was the dreamer who had many visions so King Nebuchadnezzar appointed him into a high position but also helped saved the Jews. Joseph, became a high ranking official second to the Pharaoh because he foresaw the coming famine. John the apostle, had dreams and visions about the Revelation. Being a psychic is not evil, it is just some tagged psychics evil because of their fear and ignorance.
For me, being a psychic can be very difficult. I can break you into bits but it can also make you whole. Growing up in a strict Catholic Family meant that my own family and my other relatives thought it was evil. I had to explain it to them and defend it so that they can learn about it and get rid of their ignorance.

If you are a psychic or you have a feeling you have one, you must try to learn more about yourself. You must know what kind of psychic are you. Are you a clairvoyant, claircognizant or clairaudient? You may also try to seek the help of experienced psychics, not just to learn how to be one but how to simply go about day to day life. They have many experiences that they can share with you. You can try to get some psychic readings at first to learn how psychics channel into you. You can take lessons into reading the tarot and channeling your Mind’s Eye. I hope my story has inspired you and helped you in your own journey. Take care and bless!

Still not sure about the ethics of psychics?  Read my previous post for more thoughts and a review on this matter.

Do Miracles Still Happen?

9/23/2015

Picture
“Dearest Lord Jesus, please give me a miracle.” is prayer that most of us Catholics and Christians utter to Jesus. We want to experience a miracle and we want to change our lives. Sometimes we feel that we are going through such a rough patch that we feel that the only way to solve our problems or our sicknesses is through a miracle.

But many doubt that miracles still do exist nowadays. They think that miracles are only things that have happened in the Bible with the apostles or the saints. They think they live such menial day to day lives that have a miracle happen is something unperceivable. Many Christians or Catholics have faith but not enough faith to see miracles. They are too blinded by life’s busyness, their problems and things that happen around them for them to notice. But yes, even in this day and age MIRACLES STILL DO HAPPEN.

What are miracles?

According to Wikipedia, a miracle is an event which is surprising and welcome and is good in nature. It cannot be explained by science and therefore is believed to be given via a divine intervention. Miracles are things that happen that we do not expect but with which is very helpful to us or to others. Miracles have been seen and perceived in many different religions and beliefs. But in all of these religions, miracles have a unifying quality, it is the ability to provide something good and extraordinary.

In the bible, there are four kinds of miracles, these are the creation, controlling nature, curing the sick from natural or demonic ailments and having the power over life and death. Jesus mainly did three kinds of miracles having control over nature, curing the sick and exorcising demons from possessing people. In order to call something a miracle, it must be felt by any one of our five senses. It also has to free from any natural causes and is not associated to anything that is caused by man or nature. Jesus mainly did miracles to show his divine right as the Messiah.

How can we see a Miracle?

To see a miracle would truly be one of the best events of someone’s life. But how do we see a miracle? According to the gospel according to Matthew, one must only have faith the size of a mustard seed and he will be able to move mountains (Matt 17:20).This is also true for witnessing miracles. We must be open to God’s grace. And the path to seeing miracles from the Lord is through faith.

There may be many technical ways to define miracles. The Vatican has requirement for something to be called a miracle. But for me, I think miracles can come from anyone, anytime and anywhere. People around us can be miracles. Pets and animals around us can be miracles. Even the first breath in the morning that you take can be a miracle. We can either choose to live life and see things as normal and ordinary or we can open our eyes or see them as miracles.

Most of us live each day as ordinary and just waiting for a good moment to come.  We wait for the weekend to come. We wait for holidays to be happy. We wait for paydays to celebrate and be happy. We wait till we go to a good restaurant to enjoy good food. But this does not have to be. We can start appreciating each and every day that is given to us. The fact that we are well and was able to wake up this morning is a miracle enough. We can start counting our blessings. We can choose the way we feel. Instead of feeling stressed and down, we can choose positivity and happiness. We can be thankful that we do not need to go through trash to have a meal on our table. We can smile at each and every moment of our lives.

You Can Be a Miracle!

Yes you can be a miracle. Many people and beings around you are praying for a miracle to come to them. Many stray dogs and cats wish to be adopted and to be loved. Many of them stay in the pound and some are just waiting to be euthanized because no one was kind enough to take them in. You can be the answer to the prayers of these little angels. You can also visit those who are in prison where most of their family members have forgotten them. You can go to the hospital and visit those who are alone and no one to cheer them up. You can lend a helping hand in shelters to feed the homeless. Directly helping a homeless man or woman could not only cheer them up but also help out a smile on your face.

We are called to be stewards of God. This means that we have to take care of each other. We need to help those people who can receive help. We need to help those who people have refused to assist. Many times we are given the chance to change lives and make people happy but we are often too blind or too busy to hold out our hands.

Do miracles still happen? Yes they do. You can be that miracle right now. You can change the world, one good deed at a time.

Why Do People Question Their Faith?

7/15/2015

Picture
Many people have gone through a journey of finding themselves and finding out about their faith. They want to know why everything is and they want to see the logic in their religion. They would like to have their religions intellectually be explained and to make sense to them. They long for answers to questions that never seem to end. Many have gone through the struggle. Many chose a different path. But all in all we would like to know why.

Faith is Different From Religion

Many people confuse faith with being the same as religion. Most people are born into the religion they are in. They feel that this is right because it was what their taught them but at some point they start questioning their beliefs because this was not their own idea to begin with.

Faith is the belief in something much bigger than you. It is the knowing something even if you cannot see or touch it. Faith is an action word; it is not merely clinging into something but it is a movement towards creating things and doing things that support your beliefs and morals. Faith is not bound by dogma or traditions. It is a relationship with something or someone and putting your full trust on that belief.

On the other hand, religion is created by man. It is a system of controlling people. Religion is not evil but if we go on believing something we do not understand, we are nothing but a number in the statistic; a follower in the crowd. In the old times, religions were associated with power. Kings were considered gods and prophets were the chosen ones. They held a divinity given by a higher power. However there is a kind of religion that is associated with action and faith. When the disciples preached they had to live a life following Christ, this was during the time that it was not yet a religion but a way of life. In Buddhism, the people had to follow the writings that would lead them freedom from suffering called life. They have not to only follow but to believe and practice these acts. Now that is religion and faith combined.

Why Do People Choose to Step Away?

People think. They are capable of critical thinking. Each and every one has freewill; the ability to choose what is right or wrong for us. This allows us to stir our boats into the right direction. Many people see holes in their religion. This is mainly because they were not made to understand what the faith is all about. They were merely indoctrinated to it and had to follow their parents because this was what is “right”.

Once a person feels unhappy with what he sees or feels, he begins to stray away. He wants more answers. Sometimes people around him judge him before they understand him. This intensifies the need to question and then later causes one to pull away.

How Can We Keep Christians and Catholics in Our Church?

In the recent years, church attendance has dropped severely. People don’t see the essence of going to church anymore. They feel that it does not do anything for them and that they would rather sleep or do something else. But how can the Church keep its people? Simple, make Church relevant to a person’s day to day life. The church should not condemn, but rather teach. It should teach ways that are useful in everyday life. It is still about how timeless the Bible is but it is also about using the teaching found in this Book to lead a Christian life in the modern world.

We cannot help our intellect to at times question our beliefs and morals. But we can try to put more understanding on what really goes inside the Church and what the essence of it is. It is not outdated but rather a practical teaching which we can use to live a good life.

What is the Sense of Living (if We Will Go To Heaven Eventually)?

6/23/2015

Picture

“Life is a gift.” I often hear this phrase being said. But many of us who go through struggles in life think about the reasons why need to go through all this pain, all this sorrow. Sometimes we just think why do we need to suffer if in the end we will go to a better place? There are so many things that we want to know about life, about existence but what we long for is happiness and release; release from pain.

Life is a Gift

This phrase is not just a cliché it is true. We were not created by God just to be tested in this life and prepare for the next. I don’t think that God spent so much love, time and effort in creating us and this beautiful planet just for us to supper. Life should be celebrated. Every single day, even if as we strive to be His children, we should still live a life that is happy and full. We should enjoy His wonderful creations.

A good example is the fruit fly, the fruit fly only has about less than 24 hours to live, but it lives. I flies from flower to flower, fruit to fruit helping in the pollination process; helping in balancing life. You may think that 24 hours is an awfully short time to live, but to the fruit fly, it is a beautiful lifetime.

When we go to bed at night, we don’t even know if we will ever awake the next day, but we lay our heads in bed and hold on to faith that the next day will be a better one. Even if we are so down and even if we feel depressed at times, life is still beautiful. You may think that you are totally damaged and meaningless, but have you ever thought that your scars make you beautiful.

Life is Meant to be Lived

Many Christian wonder about the Heaven and the eternal life beyond. On the other hand many Christians, also forget how to live; they become too engrossed with the afterlife, that they forget the present life. But this should never be. God has commanded us to live and be fruitful; by being fruitful He did not just mean to reproduce, but also to be productive and happy. Many Christian shun people who are secular, but have we forgotten that Christ walked among the Gentiles, Samaritans and even sinners. He did not judge them but instead healed them and showed them love. We should be the same, we should show our brothers and sisters that we are not here to judge them, but to be their friends.

Little things in life can be meaningful in our Christian journey, the way we wake up, the way we drive our cars to work, the way we speak. All the things we do should be pleasing to God. We need to live every day with joy and happiness without forgetting our promise to God.

Is this World Sinful?

Many say that this world is full of sin. Yes that may be true but we should not see it that way. We should not be bitter about this life and this world. We should be more open minded to others. If we always condemn others, then this begets hatred, and hatred begets wars. Pope Francis has already said that it not necessary to just be Christian or Catholic to be saved, even others from different religions can be saved too, if they are good people and they have lived a clean life.

So what could we do in this sinful world? Be a true Christian but also be human. We are all humans; brothers and sisters no matter what our religion, race or gender is. We should respect one another and offer love to one another. There is already so much hate and pain in this world and I hope as Catholics, we do not add to that hate. We should aim first to change our heart and ourselves and them change will follow around us.

So What is the Sense of Living?

The sense of living is the Breath of Life that Christ has given each and every one of us. We need to breathe this Breath of Life to others. The sense of living is being strong and beautiful even if we sin and face hardships. We need to get up and pick ourselves when we fall down. We need to be always prepared for the LIFE TO COME.

Should Catholics Believe in Psychics?

6/22/2015

Picture

Should we ever believe in psychics? That is the question. As Catholics and Christians we have always, always struggled with things that is beyond what the Church and dogma tells us. We fear what is unknown. We declare evil what is beyond our understanding. But to be a child of God, should we really be ignorant? To be children of God should we shun the gifts that God has given to his other children?

Who are Psychics?

Psychics are people who are often given additional talents beyond what is normally known to man according to most people. But what is normal and what is not? Well, anyway, psychics to define their talent are people who are gifted with the ability to see, sense, hear or perceive the future. They are people who can see beyond the fabric of time and space, which is normally invisible to most. Psychics are normally extra sensitive and have their gifts given to them from childhood.

There are three main types of psychics: clairvoyants, clairaudients and clairsentients and a fourth kind who uses tools to enhance his or her abilities. Clairvoyants are those who can see the future. They are either gifted with the ability to see clear aspects of the future or just glimpses of it. Joseph the dreamer who was the second hand of the Pharaoh was an example of a clairvoyant. Clairaudience is the ability to hear the future. Sometimes God or his Holy Spirit talks to us to forewarn us about things to come. A lot of us may have this gift without even realizing it. However, there are some who can actually tune into their clairaudience better than others. They can focus their energies on it and tune in and really hear possibilities that are to come. Lastly is clairsentience, which is the ability to know the future. It is much like the sixth sense or intuition. Clairsentience is a gift that gives you knowledge of what is to come.

There are also other kinds of psychics. Like those who look into the stars much like the Magi who sought out the baby Jesus. They use the stars and the planets in the heavens to find out energies and messages that God may send us. There are those who use their gifts to send out healing energies and those who help other find missing things.

How do Psychics Play a Role in Catholicism?

Many people say that psychics do not belong in the Church. Many say that psychics are evil and serve the devil. But this is not so. Psychics are normal people like you and me. Believe it or not they do play a big role in the present Catholic Church. Many miracles and visions that have been witnessed by saints who can be attributed as psychics too are now held dearly by the church. Saints who have had premonitions and visions of Christ and Mary are highly regarded. On the other hand, many women who were psychics and of science were killed in witch hunts. The Church always feared anything that can endanger its power, even if it is the truth.

Even in the Old Testament, visions from the prophets played a huge role in shaping the Church as we know it now. In the New Testament, Jesus healed people and awoke Lazarus from the dead. He has given his disciples these gifts too. How can we not see that these are the very same gifts that some psychic brothers and sisters have?

Should We Believe in Psychics?

All in all I think being a psychic should not be seen as something evil. Psychic abilities are great gifts that God has given some of our brothers and sisters to help one another to achieve happiness and fullness. Some may say that only God can know the future, and yes that is true. But he also gave His sons and daughters the ability to see visions and listen to His Voice. He us given us all different gifts. Gifts of speech, gifts to heal others, gifts to teach and gifts which are beyond this realm.

Psychics should be given a chance and not be condemned. Many psychic Catholics and Christians have to hide who they really are for the fear of being shunned. They want to also be accepted in the Church they love. They also want to live a happy and normal life. Most psychics just want to share their talents and help people. I hope we can give them a chance.

And to be honest. I do consult psychics too.

How Should We Pray?

6/19/2015

Picture

Praying is about communicating with God. It is a moment where you open your heart and talk to him. Prayer can be a song, a dance or a thought that you offer to God. But how should we really pray? How should we commune with God? How do we speak do to Him? Does he even ever hear our prayers?

In today’s busy world many people have forgotten to pray. Some do pray but they have forgotten the true form of prayer. They only pray when they are asking God for something. They only pray when they are down in the dumps and there is no one else to call but God. There is nothing wrong with praying at these bad times, but we need to remember that we need to pray in other moments of our lives too.

Steps in Praying

I know many churches in different denominations advocate to pray freely and smoothly as if talking to God. But remembering some basic steps in praying is important too. In this way we can convey our love and intentions to God well.

1. Praise God – A lot of people forget to tell God how important He is in their lives and how magnificent He is. Many would ask “but why do we need to still flatter God?”. But it is not about flattery, but rather an expression of how much you love God. You have to thank Him for all the blessings He has given you, but aside from that you should exalt Him. Much like when you meet a man or a woman that is very attractive and you give them praises, God deserves that too. He rejoices in those who know how to praise His Name.

2. Ask for forgiveness – This is a step which most people forget. They normally jump into asking God for blessings. But we must remember to ask forgiveness for our transgressions before we ask for any favors. It is much like a child asking his or her parents to go out, will the parents let the child go if he or she is still grounded? Probably not. On the other hand, God would never “ground” us and has given us freewill. He allows us to choose the path of forgiveness. It is important to ask for forgiveness so that we are clean when we ask for His blessings.

3. Pray for your family and friends – Before thinking about what you need to ask, you need to ask God to bless the people he has blessed you with. You need to allow His great blessings to shower upon them. Christianity is all about sharing Christ’s love to others. You also need to pray for those who have no one to pray for them. Those who are sick in hospitals, those who have no families, those who are in jail and even those in far flung countries.

4. Pray for the blessings you want in your life – Of course God is a generous God, he is willing to bless us abundantly. He can give us our hearts desires. If we pray to Him and ask him for something we need to be SPECIFIC. We need to be clear on what we really want because if not God might send you something that you are not asking for. On the other hand we need to remember that God knows what we truly need. He knows what is best for us and what would make us grow or not. So God may answer our prayers in three ways: “Yes. No. And Wait.” God tells us to be patient always.

5. Thank God – Thank God again for the blessings you have received and the blessings that he will bestow upon you. Thank Him for being your Great Friend. God is happy to hear you thanking Him

Pre-made Prayers

Many Christians nowadays question why Catholics pray pre-made prayers such as The Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary or Glory Be. I would like to like this prayers to romantic poems we normally swoon for when our partners recite for us. It is the same with God. This prayers are normally complete in all the stages of prayers. They are short and simple and easy to remember. They can be used as guides in creating our own prayers too.

What If You are Too Busy to Pray

You are never too busy to pray. You can always make time to pray. While driving your car you can pray. While making coffee, you can pray. God has a toll free speed dial number. You can call on Him any time. He would like to hear from you. The busier you are, the more you need to pray because it means there are many, many things in your heart that God can put to rest.

Praying is still very important even in this digital and fast paced world. Offering a short prayer to God can help heal our hearts and guide us into being better Christians and better people. As a Catholic, I pray The Lord’s Prayer but I still talk to God much like he is my Friend. A Friend who would never abandon me and would always listen to me no matter what the time or day it is.

Here's some good resources on how to pray, remember these are just suggestions but they do also reference advice from the bible:

My Journey with the Sacrament of Confession

“Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.’ And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained’” (John 20:21-23).

I do read the Bible and I try my best to do it every day. I also do pray; I PRAY A LOT. I pray everywhere I go. I go to mass too; every Sunday in fact. I have a very strong relationship with God. But many ask, is it really necessary to go to confession? What is the sacrament of confession all about? How does this help you in growing as a Catholic? I have always wondered about this until I have come to commune with God recently and He showed me what it really means to have the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession.

I first had the Sacrament of Confession when I was nine. I was about to take my first communion in school and it puzzled me a lot. I felt very much embarrassed about what to tell the priest. I felt like being stripped naked and having to walk for people to see my nakedness. I did not know what to do. I asked the school catechist to teach me what to say. She said “don’t worry too much dear, Father Anton is not there to judge you. He is a servant of God, he will listen to you; just open your heart to him and tell him what you want forgiveness for”. She then gave me a piece of paper and told me to try to write down what I wanted to say because she said it would be much easier to confess if I had it written down. I was really scared and ashamed. For my sin was something uncommon of a nine year old girl. I touched myself early in my life, well at that time I did not know what it was called. At that point I was one of those young girls who were raised to sex as something dirty. Little did I know that it was but a normal biological thing to do? I wanted to sink in the floor and cry. I don’t want to tell that to our school priest! I was a good student who always had perfect grades and went to Sunday school and Mass fervently. I tried to still my thumping heart. I tried to write down what I felt. The shame, the grief, the sorrow all gripped my little heart. When it was finally my turn to go to the confession box, I trembled with fear.

I did not say what I wrote down. I was so scared. I just told Father Anton that I had some “disturbing thoughts” and that I stole some money from my mother’s purse. He told me to pray three Our Fathers and three Hail Marys as well as one Act of Contrition. I left the confession box with tears rolling down my eyes. I went to where they lit candles and lit my small paper on fire and prayed. I told God “Why is it so difficult to say what is in my heart? Why do I think and do things that is not acceptable to You? I want to tell him, the priest but I couldn’t”.

After that I went to confession regularly. I stopped touching myself for fear of being sinful. I lived a life a child which is considered good and clean. Years passed. I became a girl of sixteen and then I had a boyfriend. He took my virginity away. I knew having sex out of wedlock was sinful in the eyes of God. But I couldn’t let go of the high that I felt every single time my boyfriend and I made love. At that time I started to question my faith. I started to think that many things that were thought in Sunday school and the Mass were all just but lies to stop us from living our lives to the fullest. I started to search for answers. Until I was nineteen when I had a vision. A vision of God. A vision that changed my life. This was a dream where God told me to go tell His message to the world.

As I began picking up the pieces again, I started reading the Bible once more. I started praying more. And then came the point of taking the Holy Communion. I had to have the Sacrament of Confession before I can take the Holy Eucharist. I did not know what to do. The same fear gripped me again. But this time. I understood many things. I understood my body. I understood my faith. I knew things differently. I no longer condemn touching one's self for it is a way to release the biological need inside of me. And although most if not all Catholics see sex as sinful and dirty, I did not. I saw that God made things to be beautiful and it is but man who tagged things as sinful; man created dogma to control other men.

I went to confession and told the priest my thoughts and feelings. I did not hesitate. And yes he said that I should not have sex out of wedlock but now I understood why. Because during the old times people had no means to do birth control. And that children who are not inside a family normally suffer from heartache and sorrow. So preventing pregnancy by stopping intercourse had a more sensible reason other than sex being dirty. I had confession again. But this time not just to tell a priest that I was a sinner; it was to communicate with a man of God. A man who studied His Word. A man I could confide with. A bridge to the Lord. Because sometimes it is wonderful to hear a voice to connect you to the SILENT WORDS OF GOD.

I do believe that we need confession. I think it is very important for us to take part of the sacraments. I also believe that God has given us the gift of freewill and that we should use it wisely. Sometimes, religion, power, politics get all mixed up and sometimes they form dogma. But being a child of God is a personal journey.

Is it Important to Go to Church Every Sunday?

Picture

It is Sunday morning and you hear your alarm buzzing. You struggle to get out of bed. Go to the bathroom. Try to brush your hair and teeth. You stare at yourself in the mirror and think to yourself “Do I really need to go to Church today?”. Then you decide to jump back to bed and tell yourself “Just another five minutes… Zzzz…” and then you wake up 20 minutes later. You now scramble to get dressed and just put your hair in a ponytail because it just won’t agree with you. You run out carrying your shoes as you go out of the door on your way to church.

Does this all sound familiar? Are you one of those people who feel as if going to Church is a waste of time? Precious time which you could use for say, hugging your pillows more or having great AM sex? Or having brunch with your friends? Or resting your hangover infested head because of partying a lot the night before? So many Americans no longer go to church any more. SO IS GOING TO CHURCH STILL IMPORTANT??? I say yes IT DEFINITELY IS! Let us now relate this to having a boyfriend or girlfriend or even children. So if you love someone you do spend time with them right? Exactly! If you love God, not just because He is God, but because you have this amazing relationship with Him, you would DEFINITELY want to spend time with Him.

Going to Church is the Way God talks to You

If you pray a lot, maybe at some point you may have asked yourself “Why is God not answering my prayers? Doesn’t He hear me?”. Yes He does hear you. He wants to speak to you. Yes there is the Scriptures but hearing the Word of God in Church spoken by a man of God can be very liberating. First you listen to someone who actually studied God’s Word as their vocation and job. They do not have much other distraction and their main duty is to deliver God’s word to you.

Going to church fires up your soul. The singing of the choir is like the song of angels in heaven that truly inspires your heart. Hearing the sermon or homily helps answers a lot of questions you may have about what you are going through right now. Praying together, now that, that is power praying.

Praying Together with the Church

You may argue that you do pray alone and that your relationship with God is but personal. Yes that is right and there is nothing wrong with that. But praying together with the Church gives your prayer more power. Think about it like internet connection, the more bandwidth you have the faster pages load.

Another thing is you can meet people who also have lives outside Church, but they set aside their time to commune with God. You can make friends with people who also have the same spiritual feelings as you do have. If you have more time, why not join church organizations. The world is changed by people who come together towards a common goal.

It is Written

God said to Moses for us to keep the Sabbath Day holy. This is not just because God wants you to take out one day from your life, He wants you to let go. He wants you not to spend every day worrying about life but spend some time with Him. He loves us very much that He understands what we really need more than we understand our needs. He knows that our soul needs some time to sit back and just listen to Him “talking” to us in His ever sweet Voice.

So Is Going To Church Still Practical?

I say it is! Imagine how much money we can save from therapy. We spend much time sharing inspirational quotes on FB or Twitter because we want to be inspired but how about listening to His Word? It can be much more inspirational. The wisdom taught in Church is still very much valuable in this day and age. It is practical advice that we can always use in our everyday lives.

Living as a Christian in the Noughties

Becoming a Christian and accepting Christ as your personal Lord and Savior is one of the best things that can ever happen to you. You are full of joy and excitement. You feel the rush of the Messiah going into every fibre of your soul. You feel like you are going to explode with joy. You are so full of blessings that you just want to share it into the world. But the world can be cruel and sinful at times. It has it’s temptations that pull you away from your relationship with Christ. So you try your best to be a good Christian despite what the world outside the church is; the question is how? How do you live a life pleasing to God in this modern times? How do you relate with your non believer friends and relatives with sounding too righteous or awful?

The World Has Forgotten its Values

Many people now a days no longer believe in religion or in the importance of having a good relationship with God. They go about life like there is no tomorrow. They believe in the saying “YOLO, You live only once” and because of that go about life as if there are no consequences to their actions. Now some of these people can be your friends or even relatives. Yes, you do love them dearly but you do not want to live in sin. You want to be a role model to others yet you do not want to seem to be a critical and disconnected type of person.

Living as a Christian in a world were values mean so little can sometimes be difficult. But we must remember the teachings of St. Paul, where he said to live a life of holiness no matter what the world around us says. We must follow the examples of Christ that even when ridiculed or hurt, he stood up for what he believed in. Become a beacon of light. Do not push your beliefs on other people, but use your actions as an instrument to spread the word of God to others.

There are Still Many Good Things in This World

Contrary to what most old fashioned people say that the world now is all evil, it is surely not. The world is filled with good and wonderful things and people that God has created. Music is one. Many conservative Christians condone secular music, however God created music and much of the modern music do convey love or good things. Mass media is not all violence. People from all walks of life can show you goodness or kindness, much like what Pope Francis has said that it does not matter what religion you come from, as long as you do good then you are a child of God.

Many traditional Christians were brought up to believe that much of the other religions are evil, but in truth they are not. We all believe in God, we just call him in different names. Politics has played a big role in shaping the church. If politics will be set aside as well as prejudice then we should not hate our Muslim, Buddhist or even Pagan brothers and sister. Many traditional believers think that psychics and astrologers are not of God, but how about the three Magi who followed the star of Bethlehem as their sign to Christ? Or Joseph the dreamer who was given by God the visions that saved Egypt during the time of famine. God has given people many gifts that we may not understand and just because we do not understand them, it does not mean we should condone them.

Spread the Word of God

Being a Christian, you must help show the world who God is. Instead of forcing people to believe in dogma, you should show kindness and love in every act. You must be like Christ who walked among the Gentiles and Samaritans and showed no hate for them just because they were different. You must speak like a child of God.

There are many ways to spread the Word of God. You can volunteer in soup kitchens to help feed the needy. You can donate to homeless people. One of the other things you can give is your time. Visit those who are forgotten and lonely; those who are in retirement homes or prison. Many of the people who live there are not visited by their family and therefore do not feel the love they deserve. You may also sing in church or speak in the pulpit as a reader or even a preacher. There are countless ways to share God’s Word.

What Should You Do?

Now that you know that you need to be a beacon of God’s Light, then you also should live a life of Christian. You must always read the Word of God. The Bible is a source of strength and wisdom. You must take in the Daily Bread to feed your soul. You should also attend church regularly. You must listen to God’s Word. Giving the right amount of tithes is also very important. Being a good steward of Christ means that you have to invest in His Church. You must not take away what is meant for God. Pray every day. When you are down and troubled, pray. When you are happy and full of joy, pray. Prayer is the best weapon against sadness, fear, sickness, anger and everything else in this world. Finally you must act and speak like a Christian. You must watch what comes out of your mouth. Every day you must pray and say that you will not hurt any of God’s creations; be it human or animal. Be careful with your words because the tongue is very powerful.

Living as a Christian in today’s society can be a bit difficult. Many people will dissuade or test you. You must remain firm to your promise to God. Being a Christian in the modern times does not mean living a boring life, it mean being able to be happy in the service of Christ.
